Why Should I Donate?

We often get asked where donations are used and how we are different from any of the other groups that call requesting your hard earned money. Hopefully, after seeing how your money is used, you will continue to (or begin) to donate to the MPPOA. There are other groups that claim to assist the MPPOA or the "Marlborough Police." No other group, association, or business solicits for the MPPOA except Eastern Advertising and we only conduct ONE residential fundraiser each year. In years past we did conduct two (and held two events) however do to the economic downturn and overall decreased donations, we dropped the second fundraising event. After all, we don't want to irritate those that donate to us by calling all the time!

There are other groups, as mentioned, that call claiming to benefit the Marlborough Police. We will say that MAY be true, and it may be false. There is only one other group that is actually employed by the City of Marlborough that represents the Superior/Command Officers. That group represents the sergeants, lieutenants, and captains, currently about 17 individuals. In contrast, the MPPOA represents the patrol officers and detectives (non-ranking) which is currently 47 individuals.

The rest of the organizations that call may or may not have any affiliation with the Marlborough Police Department. Groups such as the Fraternal Order of Police (FOP) or the Massachusetts Police Association (MPA) often call requesting donations saying that it will assist the Marlborough Police. Both of these organizations are an individual officer choice to be a member. In other words, only one member of the MPPOA could be a FOP member, or none could be. National and State groups such as these may indirectly assist the "Marlborough Police" such as supporting police in general and issues surrounding our profession but no donations made to these groups ever DIRECTLY go to the MPPOA.

That being said, these groups are not necessarily bad or defrauding you. You should request contact information of the person that is calling and what group they are representing and do research to see if it is worth your donation. The FOP and MPA are legitimate groups and associations and were only used as examples. We just want to clarify that money donated to any other group does not actually reach the MPPOA. You can find links to these organizations and others in the Links page on our website (after all, if they were illegitimate, would we link to them?)
